Wistanstow Foot Bridge

On the 27th of January a new bridge over the Railway was opened.

It is just north of Craven Arms in the parish of Wistanstow, but is nearer to Craven Arms.

It can be seen, if you don’t want to walk to it, from Craven Arms Station.

I think it is beautiful and when I recently walked that way, I could see that the crossing was in a dangerous place. The crossing is on a sharp bend giving poor visibility to the north.

If you are hearing impaired you would not be able to hear a train coming before seeing it.

It has been made largely from recycled or sustainable materials.

There is a programme, which will take many years of replacing crossing with bridges to make them safer.

For me it not just about making them safer, it is about getting to see the countryside or townscape from a different perspective.

This new bridge is on a walk I often do, and for the last few months I have had to walk further up the A49. I will look forward to looking south over Craven Arms and north to the Long Mynd.

The photograph in the header of this post was taken on 25th January 2023 before the bridge was opened. You can see a workman still working on the bridge. The view is from the south-east of the foot bridge looking towards the north-west.
